때는 바야흐로 1년 전. 만료를 앞둔 아시아나 마일리지를 어떻게 쓸지 고민했다. 가까운 일본을 갈까, 아니면 제주도로 짧게 다녀올까… 그러다가 ‘에라 모르겠다!’ 싶었다. 이왕 쓰는 거라면 최대 효율로 장거리 비즈니스석으로 여름휴가를 계획해보자는 생각이 들었다.
뉴욕은 나의 손꾸락 스피드(?)로는 부담스러워서 조금 더 만만한 시애틀을 목표로 삼았다. 성수기 할증 기간을 피해서 인천 출발편 두 장을 성공적으로 발권 완료. 돌아오는 일정은 따로 끊으면 유류할증료가 정말 어마무시해서, 편법 같지만 합법적인 방식으로 왕복 항공권까지 묶어 총 2인 발권 완료♡

아시아나는 어린이 마일리지 할인이 있어서 정말 마음에 들었다.
남편은 대기를 걸어둔 채로 기다렸는데 6월쯤, 오랜만에 이코노미석을 검색해봤더니 시애틀 왕복이 80만 원대? 이건 못 참지! 하고 일단 구매. 이후 비즈니스 대기 확인 전화를 꾸준히 하더니 며칠 뒤 마침내 대기 풀림! 스얼골드 만세. 게다가 이번에는 마일리지 할인까지 적용되어 작년보다 훨씬 적은 마일로, 유류할증료도 저렴하게 발권했다.

이미 구입한 이코노미 항공권 환불 수수료가 20만 원이 넘었지만, 언제 또 3명이 함께 비즈니스석을 탈 기회가 있겠나 싶어 과감히 취소. (11개월 때 몰디브 이후로 처음이다.) 이렇게 세 식구 시애틀 왕복 비즈니스 마일리지 항공권, 드디어 발권 완료!
시애틀 항공권을 샀지만, 사실 이번 여름휴가의 최종 목적지는 캐나다였다. 남편이 20년 전 어학연수를 했던 도시 밴쿠버, 그리고 북아메리카 여행하면 빼놓을 수 없는 록키산맥. 마침 10년마다 찾아오는 태양활동 극대기 시기라 오로라도 기대했지만… 일정 조율 끝에 결국 옐로나이프에서 3박은 무리라 판단했다. 아쉽지만 오로라는 10년 후로 미루고 이번엔 ‘록키 + 밴쿠버 + 시애틀’ 일정으로 확정.
이에 맞춰 캘거리행 항공권도 가격이 내려왔을 때 타이밍 좋게 웨스트젯 공동운항편인 델타로 예매 완료. (+계획대로 되지 않아1)
또 현아플로 발급받은 힐튼–내셔널–허츠의 3단 SM 프로그램을 통해 허츠 렌터카 예약까지 마무리. (+계획대로 되지 않아2)

On the plane (ICN - SEA) 

퇴근 후, 하교를 마친 아이와 함께 인천공항으로 출발했다. 남편은 회사에서 바로 공항으로 이동. 공항에서 만나 예약해둔 발렛 서비스를 맡기고, 비즈니스석 체크인 카운터로 향했다.
모바일 체크인도 가능했지만, 혹시 시애틀–캘거리 구간까지 쓰루 체크인이 가능한지 궁금해서 일부러 카운터에서 확인했다. 보통 델타 항공이면 가능하지만, 이번 항공편은 델타 공동운항편이면서 실제 운항은 웨스트젯이라 불가능하다고 했다. 그래도 끝까지 꼼꼼히 확인해준 직원분께 감사 인사까지.
체크인과 수하물 수속을 마치고 보안 검색, 출국 심사를 거쳐 면세 구역으로 입장했다. 면세품 인도장에 들러 미리 주문해둔 물품을 찾은 뒤, 에어스타 룰렛 이벤트에 참여하기 위해 이동. 결과는 둘 다 3달러 쿠폰 당첨! QR코드 등록 후 총 6달러 할인을 받아 뵈브 샴페인 한 병을 구입했다. 그리고 뽑기 게임까지 도전했지만… 결과는 또다시 “모기팔찌 당첨”. (몽골 여행 때에 이어 두 번째라 웃음이 나왔다.)
이후 아시아나 라운지로 이동해 간단히 주전부리를 먹고, 보딩 사인 확인 후 탑승 게이트로 향했다.오늘 우리가 타고 갈 비행기는 B777-200LR, OZ272편. 다녀와서 찾아보니 2002년에 제작된 HL7700 기체였다. 어쩐지 모니터 화질이 아쉽고 UI 디자인이 스물한 살 때 봤던 그 시절 느낌...저녁은 쇠갈비구이 쌈밥에 샴페인을 곁들였고, 아침은 들깨 닭죽으로 주문했다. 이륙 후 식사가 금세 나오기 시작했고, 깜빠리·포트와인·리슬링 등 다양한 술을 부탁드리며 여행의 시작을 만끽했다. 음식은 전체적으로 괜찮았고, 특히 애피타이저로 나온 문어숙회가 일품이었다.중간에 라면이 먹고 싶어서 주문하려다 깜빡 잠들어버렸는데, 아침 식사 때쯤 깨버렸다. 자지 말고 끝까지 즐길 걸 그랬나 살짝 아쉬움. 아침으로 나온 닭죽은 별로여서 거의 먹지 않았다.
도착 전 기장이 예정 시간보다 40분 정도 지연되었다고 방송했다. 시애틀 도착은 12시 45분, 출발은 19시 35분으로, 원래 6시간 50분이던 환승 시간이 6시간 10분으로 줄었다는 안내에 괜히 기분이 좋아졌다.
드디어 시애틀 도착. 이제 본격적인 미국 입국 절차의 시작이다.

 

At the airport 

비행기 기록을 보니 게이트 도착이 오후 1시 26분이었다.
긴 에스컬레이터를 따라 올라가니 Welcome to the United States라는 문구가 눈에 들어왔고, 통로를 지나니 새로 지은 듯한 깨끗한 터미널이 우리를 맞이했다. 수하물도 금세 나왔고, 입국 심사까지 너무나 순조로워 1시 40분에 모든 절차를 마쳤다.
짐 찾고 입국 심사까지 하면 최소 2시간은 잡아야 한다고 해서 일부러 여유 있게 캘거리행 환승편을 예약했는데, 20분 만에 끝나다니… 예상 밖이네.
입국 후 혹시 몰라 Transfer 표지판을 따라 델타 카운터로 가서 캘거리행 체크인을 시도했지만, 웨스트젯 운항편이라 웨스트젯 카운터에서만 가능하다는 답변. 델타 발권이면 일찍 에어사이드(보안 구역)에 들어가 시간을 보낼 수 있을 줄 알았는데, 그 계획이 산산이 무너졌다. 결국 웨스트젯 카운터가 열리는 오후 4시 30분까지 랜드사이드(일반 구역)에서 기다려야 하는 상황.
Welcome to Seattle 글자를 지나며 “이쪽은 오래된 터미널인가?” 싶을 만큼 분위기가 달라졌다. 한 층 올라가 델타 직원에게 다시 문의하니 “시간이 되면 저쪽 웨스트젯 카운터가 열릴 거예요.”라는 설명. 그런데 이미 2시 조금 넘은 시각에 벌써 줄이 길게 늘어서 있었다. 신기방기!
2시간 가까이 수하물 수취대 근처 의자에 앉아 기다리다가 4시가 다 되어 웨스트젯 카운터로 향했더니 줄이 훨씬 더 길어져 있었다. 재빨리 그 뒤에 섰더니 순식간에 또 인파가 길게 이어졌다. 정확히 3시간 전인 4시 35분부터 체크인이 시작되었고, 편견 없는 친절한 웨스트젯 직원 한 명이 천천히, 그러나 꾸준히 일을 처리했다. 우리 차례가 된 건 정확히 1시간 뒤, 오후 5시 30분.
원래 수하물 1개당 35달러라고 들었는데, 두 개 모두 무료로 처리됐다. 이유는 모르겠지만, 덕분에 기분은 업!
체크인을 마치고 드디어 에어사이드로 들어갔는데, 신기하게 출국 심사는 없었다. 여권만 확인하고 바로 통과. “들어오기는 힘들어도 나가긴 쉬운 나라”라는 말이 괜히 있는 게 아닌가 보다.
6시간 50분의 긴 환승 시간을 버티기 위해 내가 세운 원대한 계획은 바로 시애틀 American Express Lounge 이용!
이걸 위해 현아플을 통해 아멕스 카드를 발급받기까지 했는데 —
오, 마이 갓. 도착해보니 Maintenance로 라운지가 닫혀 있었다.
시애틀–캘거리 구간의 나의 야심찬 계획 두 가지가 이 순간 완전히 무너졌다.
멘붕에 빠진 나와, 배 고파 투정 중인 아이. 결국 남편이 이 상황을 수습했다.
바로 앞에 있는 스시 도시락 가게에서 도시락 두 개를 사서 간단히 식사.
양은 새모이만큼인데 가격은 무려 51달러, 거의 7만 원. 실화냐 싶었다.
지금 생각해보면 그때 정신만 차렸어도, 아멕스 카드로 나 혼자 Delta Sky Club이라도 들어가 있었을 텐데 말이다.
그래도 사진을 보니, 그 스시 도시락집의 뷰가 정말 멋졌다.
그렇게 점심인지 저녁인지 모를 식사를 대충 마치고 A 게이트에서 D 게이트까지 천천히 이동.
가는 길에 샌드위치라도 사 먹을까 싶었지만, 편의점 도시락에 12달러라니… 즉시 포기.
D 게이트 앞 의자에 앉아 기다리는데, 또 다른 “편견 없는 친절한” 웨스트젯 승무원이 탑승 안내를 시작했다.
줄을 서서 버스를 타고 비행기로 이동, 드디어 캘거리행 탑승 완료!

 

On the plane (SEA-YYC) 

캘거리행 비행기는 지연 없이 제시간에 출발했다. 아이는 탑승하자마자 다시 잠들었고, 창문 밖으로는 해가 지며 높은 산 위에 만년설이 반짝이고 있었다. 저가항공임에도 음료와 간식을 제공해 주었고, 수하물 비용도 부과되지 않아 웨스트젯에 대한 인상이 좋았다.
캘거리에 도착해서 짐을 찾고 밖으로 나오니, 와—너무 추웠다. 짐에서 두꺼운 옷을 꺼내 아이에게 주섬주섬 입히고, 안내받은 웹페이지에서 호텔 셔틀을 요청했으나 오랜 시간 연락이 없었다. 호텔에 직접 전화하니 조금 더 기다리면 온다고 했다. 약 15분 뒤 Acclaim Hotel 셔틀이 도착했고, 이미 앞에 몇 명의 승객이 타고 있었다. 아마 국내선에서 온 사람들이었을 것이다. 운전기사분이 친절하게 생수를 건네주셔서 고마웠다.
셔틀을 타고 약 5분 만에 호텔에 도착했다. 이때가 밤 11시 50분경. 시애틀과는 1시간 시차가 있으니 비행기 출발 후 3시간 만에 호텔에 도착한 셈이었다. 나쁘지 않았다.
호텔 내 피자집은 10시에 문을 닫았고 주변에 마땅한 식당도 없어서, 윗층에 있는 자판기에서 과자와 육포 등을 사서 허기를 달랬다. 아이는 작은 튀김우동 하나를 먹었다.
비즈니스석을 탔던 때와는 너무나 달라진 우리 모습에 살짝 서글펐지만, 정갈하게 샤워를 하고 잠자리에 들었다. 오늘은 이동하는 날이었으니, 내일부터 본격적인 캐나다 여행을 시작해보자!

Seattle, Calgary, and Vancouver Travel Plan: A Dream Business Class Journey with Miles

Travel Preparation - A Business Class Trip Using Miles

The trip started being planned about a month in advance. With my Asiana miles expiring in a year, I was wondering how to best use them. Initially, I thought about going to Japan or Jeju, but I decided to take the opportunity to use my miles for a long-haul business class trip. New York was too far for me to handle, so I aimed for the more manageable Seattle instead.

Avoiding the peak season surcharge, I booked two business class round-trip tickets from Incheon. I used a method that seemed like a loophole but was actually a legitimate way to combine the outbound and return flights, saving a lot on the fuel surcharge. The total cost was 125,000 miles + 320,000 KRW for one ticket and 93,750 miles + 313,000 KRW for the other. Asiana’s children’s mileage discount was a huge bonus.

Ticket Booking Update - Securing Business Class Seats

My husband was on a waiting list for a business class seat, while I found an economy seat for about 800,000 KRW for a Seattle round-trip. I decided to buy it right away. After that, I kept checking for availability of business class seats, and a few days later, they opened up! Long live Star Alliance Gold! What’s more, there was a mileage discount, so I used fewer miles and paid significantly less in fuel surcharges compared to the tickets I booked a year ago. (115,000 miles + 218,100 KRW)

Even though the refund fee for the economy tickets was over 200,000 KRW, I canceled them because there was no way I could miss the chance for all three of us to fly business class. Finally, we secured business class tickets for all three of us for the Seattle round-trip!

Final Destination - Canada

While the Seattle trip was set, the final goal of the vacation was Canada. I had always wanted to visit Vancouver, the city where my husband did his language studies over 20 years ago, and the Rocky Mountains—and it was the perfect timing to catch the aurora, which appears only every 10 years. Although we originally planned to go to Yellowknife for the aurora, we decided to skip it this time, as we couldn’t afford to waste 3 nights there. Instead, we opted for the Rocky Mountains + Vancouver + Seattle itinerary.

The Calgary flight was booked at a good price when the timing was right, with a joint operation flight by WestJet and Delta. I also obtained the Amex Platimum to complete my Hilton-National-Hertz 3-step SM for Hertz car rental.

Departure - At Incheon Airport

After work, I went to Incheon Airport with my child. My husband went directly from his office. At the airport, we handed our car over to valet parking and went to the business class check-in counter. While mobile check-in was available, I didn’t use it because I wanted to ask if we could do a through-check-in from Seattle to Calgary.

It turns out that Delta allows through-check-ins, but since our flight was operated by WestJet, a Delta joint-operation flight, through-check-in was not possible. Still, the check-in went smoothly, and after completing the baggage check, security checks, and departure immigration, we entered the duty-free area.

In-Flight Experience - B777-200LR Business Class

We were flying on the B777-200LR (OZ272) to Seattle. After checking the flight’s information, I discovered it was manufactured in 2002, which explained why the screen resolution was poor and the UI looked outdated. However, the overall service was great. For dinner, I had grilled short ribs with lettuce wraps and champagne, and for breakfast, I ordered perilla seed chicken porridge. The octopus appetizer was particularly delicious, and I even had ramen as a snack.

However, I ended up falling asleep before I could enjoy the ramen, so when I woke up, breakfast was served, but the chicken porridge wasn’t very tasty. Overall, the food was good, except for the breakfast porridge.

There was a 40-minute delay, but we still landed in Seattle at 12:45. Although the original layover was 6 hours and 50 minutes, it was shortened to 6 hours and 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise.

Seattle Airport - Immigration and Transit

When we landed at Seattle Airport, the immigration process was incredibly smooth. The baggage arrived quickly, and we cleared immigration in 20 minutes—much faster than the expected 2 hours. I was happy that the long layover I planned for the Calgary flight turned out to be unnecessary.

After clearing immigration, I went to the Delta counter to check-in for the Calgary flight, but I was told that since the flight was operated by WestJet, I needed to go to the WestJet counter. That meant I had to wait until 16:30 for the WestJet counter to open, which wasn’t part of my original plan!

I passed the time by waiting at a nearby baggage claim area, and by 14:00, people were already lining up for check-in. At 16:35, check-in began, and we completed it by 17:30. Interestingly, the 2 checked bags were free of charge, even though I had expected to pay \$35 per bag.

Food at Seattle Airport

I originally planned to visit the Amex lounge during the long layover, but it was closed for maintenance. I then decided to buy sushi bento right in front of the lounge, which cost an incredible 51 USD. The price was shocking, and I regretted not considering the Delta Sky Club access with my Amex card.

We grabbed some sandwiches at a convenience store, but the prices were so high (about 12 USD for something you’d expect to pay 3,000 KRW for in Korea) that we didn’t bother buying any. After eating a bit, we walked from Gate A to Gate D and waited in front of the WestJet gate.

Onboard the WestJet Flight (SEA-YYC)

The WestJet flight to Calgary took off on time, and the in-flight service was great for a low-cost airline. The child fell asleep immediately, and we were treated to a beautiful sunset and views of snow-capped mountains through the window. The flight also provided drinks and snacks for free, and surprisingly, there was no charge for checked bags, which made WestJet an even better choice.

Upon arriving in Calgary, it was really cold outside. I quickly grabbed my thick jacket from the luggage and waited for the hotel shuttle. After about 15 minutes, the shuttle arrived, and we rode it to Acclaim Hotel, which took about 5 minutes. The friendly driver offered us water, which was a nice touch.

Hotel Arrival and Late-Night Snack

We arrived at the hotel at around 11:50 PM, and since Calgary is in a time zone 1 hour behind Seattle, it had only been about 3 hours since our flight left. The hotel’s pizza place had already closed at 10:00 PM, and there were no other places to eat nearby, so we ended up getting some snacks like chips and jerky from the vending machine.

Although it was a huge contrast to the comfort of business class, we still had a quiet night, took a nice shower, and went to bed to prepare for the adventurous day ahead in Canada.

Final Thoughts

Today was mostly a travel day, but everything went smoothly once we arrived at the hotel. Tomorrow, the real Canada adventure begins! We’ll explore Vancouver, the Rocky Mountains, and much more. I can’t wait to share all the details of the next part of the trip!
