DAY 5 Moraine Lake Lodge

밴프 여행을 검색해보면 제일 먼저 눈에 들어오는 게 바로 레이크 루이스–모레인 레이크 셔틀이다. 개인 차로 갈 수 있는 다른 호수들과 달리, 레이크 루이스는 주차가 너무 힘들어서 사실상 주차장이 없다고 생각하는 게 맞고, 모레인 레이크는 아예 개인 차량 진입이 불가능하다. 그래서 이 두 곳을 갈 수 있게 해주는 교통수단이 바로 셔틀이다. 그만큼 예약 경쟁이 치열해서, 일정이 확정됐다면 예약이 열리는 4월에 바로 예약하는 게 좋다. 사설 셔틀도 있긴 하지만 가격이 정말 비싸다. 우리는 Moraine Lake Lodge를 예약해서 Lake Connector는 필요 없었지만(이건 뒤에서 다시 이야기할게), 레이크 루이스로 가는 다른 방법이 없어서 셔틀을 예약해야 했다. 4월 오픈 일자, 오픈 시간에 맞춰 들어가서 그나마 사람이 적은 오전 7~8시 타임슬롯으로 예약 완료! 성인 2명, 어린이 1명(어린이는 무료) 총 19.50달러.

이른 아침 셔틀이라 일찍 일어나야 했다. 레이크 루이스에서 먹을 샌드위치를 싸고, 아직 자는 아이를 데리고 짐 챙겨 Park & Ride로 향했다. 가는 길에 산들이 끝없이 이어져서 운전이 전혀 지루하지 않았다. 그런데 도착하자마자… 너무너무너무너무 추워서 깜짝 놀랐다. 결국 캐리어에서 옷을 꺼내 입고, 셔틀 티켓을 교환하고 줄에 섰다. (주차장에서 갑자기 차 문이 안 잠기고 시동도 안 걸리는 난감한 상황이 있었는데, 추운데다 옆에서 정신없는 나를 두고도 침착하게 대응해준 남편한테 다시 한 번 감사!) 셔틀 타고 가는 중엔 아이가 또 코피가 나서 가지고 있던 마이비데로 급히 처리했다. 그 와중에도 참 정신없었지만 여행이란 게 다 이런 거지 뭐. 

드디어 도착한 레이크 루이스! 해가 아직 높지 않아 기대했던 에메랄드빛은 아니었지만, 주위를 둘러싼 산들이 만들어내는 풍경이 너무 멋졌다. 여기저기 사진 찍고 놀다가 벤치에 앉아 아침에 싸 온 잠봉뵈르(며칠째냐...)를 먹었다. 해가 올라가면서 호수 색이 점점 예뻐지고, 날씨도 따뜻해져서 기분이 너무 좋았다. 그때 만난 콜롬비아 땅다람쥐! (사실은 다람쥐가 아니라 족제비인 줄 알았는데, 블로그 쓰면서 찾아보고 알았음.) 빵 먹으며 귀여운 녀석 구경하다 보니 시간이 금방 갔다. 더 이상 할 일이 없어서 페어몬트 샤토 레이크 루이스에 들어가 구경 좀 하다가 다시 셔틀 타러 나왔다. 대부분 사람들은 모레인 레이크로 가기 위해 Lake Connector를 타지만, 우리는 Lodge 숙박 덕분에 다시 Park & Ride로 돌아가는 셔틀을 탔다.

Bow Lake & Crowfoot Glacier Viewpoint     

 파크 앤 라이드로 돌아오니 10시가 조금 넘은 시간이었다. 모레인 레이크는 12시부터 입장이 가능해서 시간이 조금 남았다. 너무 늦게 알아봐서 설퍼산 곤돌라 예약을 놓친 게 아쉬워, 대신 레이크 루이스 곤돌라를 타볼까 고민했는데… 가격 보고 바로 포기. 결국 건물 앞에 놓인 흔들의자에 앉아 리프트 오가는 걸 구경하며 여유를 즐겼다. 그래도 여전히 시간이 꽤 남아서, 주변의 다른 호수나 가보자고 결정했다. 자세히 찾아보지도 않고 지도만 보고 ‘어디서 들어본 것 같은’ 보우 호수로 향했다. (지금 생각해보면 페이토 호수를 갔으면 더 좋았을 듯!)

 약 30분 정도 달려 도착한 보우 호수. 아침 일찍 일어나 피곤했던 아이는 차에서 잠들어서 부부끼리만 잠시 내렸다. 차에서 내리자마자 바로 호수가 펼쳐져 있어서 좋았다. 이곳은 레이크 루이스보다 훨씬 자유롭고 활기찬 분위기였는데, 수영하는 사람도 있고, 보트를 가져와 바람 넣는 사람들도 있었다. 물 색이 영롱해서 정말 예뻤다. 호수 구경을 마치고 조금 더 아래로 내려오니 Crowfoot Glacier라는 뷰포인트가 있어서 잠시 멈췄다. 남편이랑 “도대체 어디가 Crowfoot이지?” 하며 한참 찾아봤지만 결국 모르겠어서 그냥 차로 돌아왔다. 이제 진짜 모레인 레이크를 즐기러 출발!

Moraine Lake Lodge   - Canoe   

 Moraine Lake Lodge는 셔틀 예약을 검색하다가 알게 되었는데, 개별 차량으로는 접근할 수 없는 모레인 호수로 들어가는 유일한 방법이 바로 이곳에 숙박하는 것이었다. 이 얼마나 특별한 여행을 꿈꾸는 사람의 경험적 허영심을 충족시켜 주기에 완벽한 장소인가. ‘이곳이다, 이곳이 바로 우리가 묵을 숙소다. 묵어야만 하는 숙소다.’ 그런 확신에 사로잡혀 일정 중 예약 가능 여부를 찾아보니 3인이 묵을 수 있는 Lodge Double Room이 8월 26일 단 하루만 남아 있었다. 생각할 틈도 없이 바로 예약했고, 이후 여행 일정은 모두 이 숙소를 중심으로 확정했다. (사실 옐로나이프 일정을 포기한 것도 이 숙소 예약이 결정적인 이유였다.)

모레인 호수 입구에서는 좌회전이 불가능해 Lake Louise 셔틀 주차장까지 가서 한 바퀴를 돌고 나서야 호수 진입로에 들어설 수 있었다. 관리 직원에게 예약 확인서를 보여주자 그는 환영의 미소를 보이며 인사를 건넸고, 기분 좋게 엔진을 다시 걸어 Moraine Lake Lodge로 향했다. 진입 도로는 왕복 2차로의 좁은 길이었는데, 차량 출입을 통제하는 이유가 금세 이해됐다. 눈앞에 터키색 빛깔의 모레인 호수가 펼쳐졌고, 우리는 Lodge 옆 주차장에 차를 세웠다. 체크인 시간이 아직 남아 우선 리셉션에서 예약을 확인하고, 키는 2시 이후에 받기로 했다.

방에 들어가기 전 Lodge에서 제공하는 light lunch를 즐겼다. 신선한 과일과 치즈, 햄, 빵, 그리고 따뜻한 스프까지 깔끔하고 맛있었다. 식사 후에는 숙박객에게 complimentary로 제공되는 카누를 타러 호수로 나갔다. 직접 호수 위에서 바라본 모레인 호수는 위에서 내려다보던 풍경과는 완전히 달랐다. 물결 위로 반짝이는 윤슬이 너무 아름답고, 장엄하게 둘러싼 Ten Peaks에 안겨 있는 듯한 느낌에 절로 노래가 나왔다.

한 시간쯤 카누를 타고 돌아오니 점심이 있던 자리에는 고소한 쿠키와 커피, 그리고 차가 준비되어 있었다. 키를 받고 쿠키 몇 개를 챙긴 채 드디어 27번 방에 입성했다. 창밖으로 보이는 모레인 호수와 산의 풍경이 숨이 멎을 만큼 아름다웠다. 게다가 방에는 웰컴 기프트로 와인 한 병이 놓여 있었다. 세심함이 느껴지는 Moraine Lake Lodge의 배려였다. 욕실 어메니티는 록시땅 제품이었고, 친환경을 표방하는 Lodge답게 냉장고는 없었다. 발코니에 앉아 호수를 바라보며 와인 한 잔을 마시고 책을 읽다가, 저녁 예약 시간이 되어 Gift Shop을 둘러본 후 레스토랑으로 향했다.

Moraine Lake Lodge   - Rock Pile  #WonderfulWildlife 

예약 시간에 맞춰 도착하니 직원이 자리로 안내해주었다. 파스타와 돼지고기, 그리고 대구 요리를 주문하고 음식이 나오기 전까지 식당 밖으로 나가 잠시 사진을 찍으며 시간을 보냈다. 드디어 음식이 나오자 배가 고팠던 우리는 말끔히 접시를 비웠다. (저녁 식사 비용 262.65달러)

Moraine Lake Lodge 직원들의 명찰에는 이름과 함께 각자의 나라 국기가 그려져 있었는데, 아이가 흥미롭게 살펴보며 알려줬다. (아니었으면 전혀 몰랐을 듯하다.) 이곳은 여름 시즌에만 운영되는 숙소라 아마 세계 각국에서 온 워킹홀리데이 근로자들이 아닐까 싶었다. 우리 테이블 담당 직원은 영국식 억양을 썼는데, 영국이나 호주에서 온 듯했다. 이런 풍광 속에서 일하는 일상은 어떤 기분일까. 예전에 신혼여행으로 갔던 해밀턴 아일랜드의 퀄리아 리조트에서 인재를 모집하던 다큐멘터리가 문득 떠올랐다. 세상에서 가장 멋진 직업을 소개하던 그 프로그램처럼, 이곳의 일상도 그랬을 것이다.

식사를 마친 후에는 모레인 호수를 위에서 내려다볼 수 있는 락파일 전망대로 올라갔다. 올라가는 길목에는 ‘이쪽 방향으로는 곰이 출몰하니 4명 이상 함께 이동하세요’라는 안내판이 있었는데, 우리는 다른 길을 이용하여 전망대로 향했다. (다음날 하이킹은 그 쪽 방향으로 진행되었다. 4명 이상이어서 다행) 이 시간대는 모레인 호수에서 나가는 마지막 셔틀 시간이었기 때문에 대부분의 관광객이 하산했고, 인도 친구 몇 명이 남아 사진을 찍고 있었다. 그들이 한참을 찍고 내려간 뒤, 우리도 조용히 풍경을 즐기며 마음껏 사진을 남겼다. 평소에는 발 디딜 틈조차 없는 인기 명소를 우리 가족끼리 단독으로 즐길 수 있었던 그 순간이 참 좋았다. 내려오는 길에는 사람을 전혀 두려워하지 않는 귀여운 다람쥐도 만났다.

방으로 돌아와 잠시 쉬다가 일몰을 보고 싶다는 생각에 다시 호숫가로 나갔지만, 해는 이미 산 뒤로 내려간 뒤였다. 하늘은 어둑해지지 않고 오히려 파랗게 남아 있었고, 기온이 점점 떨어져 결국 방으로 돌아왔다. 저녁 9시에는 Moraine Lake Lodge에서 진행되는 숙박객 프로그램이 있었는데, 화요일의 주제는 마침 아이가 좋아하는 야생동물이었다. 자연 해설사(Naturalist)가 캐나다 로키에 사는 동물들에 대해 들려주는 스토리텔링 시간이었다. 아빠와 함께 참여한 아이는 아주 만족스러워했고, 듣는 동안 눈이 반짝였다고 한다.

그렇게 모레인 호수에서의 밤은 조용히 깊어갔다. 오래 머물고 싶었지만, 허락된 시간은 오직 하루뿐이었다. 아쉬운 마음을 안고 내일 남은 시간만큼은 더 알차게 즐겨보자며 잠에 들었다.

Lake Louise

When you search for travel info about Banff, the first thing that pops up is usually the Lake Louise–Moraine Lake shuttle. Unlike other lakes that can be reached by private car, Lake Louise parking is notoriously difficult—essentially, you should assume there’s no space. Moraine Lake, on the other hand, is completely closed to private vehicles. So, the only way to visit both is by shuttle.

That’s why reservations are highly competitive. Once your travel dates are set, it’s best to book as soon as reservations open in April. Private shuttles also exist, but they’re quite expensive. Since we were staying at Moraine Lake Lodge, we didn’t need the Lake Connector (I’ll talk about that later), but we still had to reserve the Lake Louise shuttle. I logged in right when booking opened and managed to grab one of the less crowded early morning slots between 7 and 8 a.m.—$19.50 total for two adults (kids are free).

Because our shuttle was early, we had to wake up before dawn. We packed sandwiches for Lake Louise, got our still-sleepy child ready, and drove toward the Park & Ride. The drive through the endless stretch of mountains was anything but boring. But the moment we arrived… it was freezing cold! We quickly opened a suitcase to grab some extra layers, exchanged our tickets, and waited in line. (At one point, our car door refused to lock and the engine wouldn’t start—thankfully, my husband stayed calm and handled the situation while I panicked in the cold. Truly grateful for him.)

On the shuttle ride, our son suddenly had a nosebleed, so we had to clean up quickly with our portable bidet. Even with all that chaos, I thought, this is what travel is—never quite perfect, but always memorable.

Finally, we arrived at Lake Louise. The sun wasn’t up high enough yet for the lake to show its trademark emerald color, but the mountains surrounding it were breathtaking. After wandering around taking photos, we sat on a bench and ate our homemade jambon-beurre sandwiches (yes, again). As the sun climbed, the water turned a brighter shade of turquoise, and the weather warmed up perfectly.

Then we met a Columbian ground squirrel! (At first, I thought it was a weasel, but I looked it up later while writing this blog.) We spent a while watching the adorable little creature nibble away at crumbs, and time flew by. When there wasn’t much else to do, we went inside the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise to have a look around and then caught the shuttle back. Most visitors would transfer to the Lake Connector to head to Moraine Lake, but thanks to our lodge booking, we returned to the Park & Ride instead.

Bow Lake & Crowfoot Glacier Viewpoint

When we got back to the Park & Ride, it was just past 10 a.m. Our check-in at Moraine Lake Lodge wasn’t until noon, so we had some extra time. I regretted missing out on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola (completely booked out), so I thought about trying the Lake Louise Gondola—but after seeing the price, I gave up immediately. Instead, we just sat on the rocking chairs out front, watching the gondolas go up and down, soaking in the view.

We still had a bit of time to kill, so we decided to visit another nearby lake. Without thinking too much, we just drove toward Bow Lake, which I vaguely remembered hearing about. (In hindsight, we probably should’ve gone to Peyto Lake!)

It took about 30 minutes to get there. Our son fell asleep in the car—understandable after such an early morning—so my husband and I stepped out for a brief look. The lake was right there as soon as we parked, which was nice. Compared to Lake Louise, Bow Lake felt livelier and more relaxed. Some people were swimming, others were pumping air into boats. The water shimmered beautifully in the sunlight.

After enjoying the view, we drove a bit further and found a viewpoint for Crowfoot Glacier. We tried to guess which part was actually the “crow’s foot,” but even after looking for a while, we couldn’t figure it out, so we just laughed and drove back. It was time to finally head to Moraine Lake.

Moraine Lake Lodge – Canoe

We discovered Moraine Lake Lodge while researching shuttle reservations. It turned out that staying here was the only way to access Moraine Lake by private car. What a perfect destination for travelers who yearn for that once-in-a-lifetime, exclusive experience. “This is it. This is where we have to stay.”

When we checked the dates, there was only one day left for a triple occupancy Lodge Double Room—August 26. Without hesitation, I booked it immediately. From that moment on, our entire travel plan revolved around this stay. (We even gave up our Yellowknife plan because of it.)

At the lake entrance, you can’t turn left directly, so we had to loop around via the Lake Louise shuttle parking before re-entering the access road. When we showed our reservation at the checkpoint, the staff greeted us with a warm smile. The drive in was along a narrow two-lane road, and I instantly understood why general traffic is restricted. The first glimpse of that turquoise-blue lake took my breath away.

We parked by the lodge, confirmed our reservation at reception, and decided to have lunch while waiting for check-in. The lodge offered a light lunch spread—fresh fruits, cheese, ham, bread, and soup. Simple but excellent.

Afterward, we took out the complimentary canoes available to overnight guests and headed out onto the lake. Floating across the water felt completely different from the view above. The sparkling ripples and the towering Ten Peaks made me feel as if we were embraced by the mountains themselves.

When we returned about an hour later, cookies, coffee, and tea were waiting in the lounge area. We picked up our room key, grabbed a few cookies, and finally entered our room—number 27. The view of Moraine Lake and the mountains right outside our window was absolutely stunning. A bottle of wine sat as a welcome gift, another thoughtful touch from Moraine Lake Lodge. The bathroom amenities were from L’Occitane, and as part of their eco-friendly policy, there was no refrigerator.

We spent the afternoon reading and sipping wine on the balcony while admiring the lake, then stopped by the gift shop before heading to dinner.

We arrived at the restaurant right on time and were guided to our table. We ordered pasta, pork, and cod dishes. While waiting for the food, we went outside to take more photos. When the dishes arrived, we cleaned every plate—completely satisfied. (Dinner total: $262.65)

Each staff member at Moraine Lake Lodge wore a name tag with their country’s flag on it, which our son curiously pointed out. The lodge only operates during the summer, so most of the staff must be working holiday travelers from around the world. Our server had a British accent—perhaps from the UK or Australia. I wondered what it would feel like to work in such a setting. It reminded me of a job documentary I once saw about Qualia Resort on Hamilton Island during our honeymoon—the “Best Job in the World.” Working here must feel a bit like that.

After dinner, we hiked up to the Rock Pile viewpoint overlooking Moraine Lake. Along the trail, a sign warned: “Bear activity ahead—travel in groups of four or more.” We took another path to reach the top, then realized the next day’s hiking route actually went in that direction—luckily, we had enough people then.

By that time, the last shuttle had departed, so the area was almost empty except for a few visitors from India taking lots of photos. When they left, we had the viewpoint nearly to ourselves. It was rare and wonderful to enjoy this world-famous spot in complete quiet. On the way down, we even met a fearless little chipmunk who seemed completely at ease around people.

Back at the room, we rested for a bit before heading out again to see the sunset. But the sun had already disappeared behind the mountains, and even though the sky stayed an icy blue instead of turning dark, the temperature dropped quickly, sending us back inside.

At 9 p.m., the lodge hosted its evening guest program. Luckily, Tuesday’s topic was wildlife—our child’s favorite. A naturalist storyteller shared fascinating facts about the animals that live in the Canadian Rockies. Our son joined with his dad and loved every minute of it.

The night at Moraine Lake passed quietly and beautifully. I wished we could stay longer, but we only had one precious night. With a bit of wistfulness, we promised to make the most of the next day before drifting off to sleep.
