DAY 4 Cowboy Cookout

Cowboy Cookout   

여행 4일차, 처음으로 늦잠을 잔 날이었다. 아침 9시가 넘어서야 느긋하게 일어나 잠봉뵈르를 만들어 먹고, 11시에 시작하는 Cowboy Cookout을 향해 나섰다. Cowboy Cookout은 말이 끄는 수레를 타고 보우 강변을 따라 점심 식사 장소로 이동하는 액티비티다. (점심 및 팁 포함, 어른 2명 아이 1명 408.34달러) 나가는 길에 체크아웃 후 치우고 있는 방 내부를 보았더니 소파가 침대가 되어 있었다. 그걸 모르고 어제 저녁은 불편하게 소파인 채로 잤다니... 이따 돌아와서 침대로 바꿔보기로 했다. 

산으로 둘러싸인 출발지에 미리 도착해 다른 팀이 말을 타는 모습을 구경하고 수레도 살펴보며 시간을 보냈다. 이윽고 필리핀 대가족과 독일 가족이 도착해 모두 함께 출발하게 되었다. 말을 타기 전, 어제 저녁 엘크가 나타났다는 공터 이야기를 듣고 우리끼리 “시원한 저녁에 이곳에 다시 와보자”고 약속했다.  

초반 오르막 구간만 제외하면 말들은 매우 천천히 움직였다. Cave and Basin National Historic Site를 지나 차량이 통제된 구간에 들어서자 오른쪽에 눈부신 물빛의 강이 모습을 드러냈다. 빛깔과 산, 숲이 어우러진 풍경은 비현실적으로 아름다웠다.  도중에 마치 물과 기름처럼 두 물층이 섞이지 않는 구간도 있었는데, 빙하에서 녹아내린 물과 고여 있던 강물이 만나는 지점이라고 했다. 정말 신기한 장면이었다.

한 시간 남짓 달려 도착한 Cowboy Cookout 장소는 숲 한가운데 있었다. 바 형태의 공간에는 음료와 음식이 준비되어 있었고, 카우보이 한 명이 직접 우리 스테이크를 굽고 있었다. 원형으로 배치된 식탁 중앙에 모닥불이 타닥타닥 타며 분위기를 더욱 따뜻하게 만들었다. 스테이크가 구워지는 동안 아이들은 카우보이에게 밧줄 돌리기를 배웠는데, 처음엔 엉성했지만 결국 소뿔에 걸며 환호했다.

맛있게 구워진 스테이크에 샐러드와 치즈 스프를 곁들여 점심을 즐겼다. 우리와 합석한 마차 인솔자 여성 카우보이는 캐나다 동부 출신이라며 이야기를 나눴다. 대부분 영국과 호주에서 온 직원들이라 했다. 관광지답게 ‘카우보이 로망’을 연출하기 위해 백인, 금발의 직원을 채용했구나.. 하는 생각에 약간의 씁쓸한 기분이 들었다.   

그녀는 우리가 바이슨 고기를 먹어봤다고 하니 엘크 고기도 꼭 맛보라며 추천했다. 결국 밴프에서 엘크 고기를 맛보지 못한 게 아쉬움으로 남았다. 캐나다 동부에서는 버팔로 고기도 종종 먹는다고 했다.  

식사 후 한 시간쯤 지나 다시 수레에 올라 출발지로 돌아왔다. 돌아오는 길에도 풍경은 여전히 황홀했다. 약 세 시간 동안 행복한 시간을 보내고, 근처에 새로 생긴 놀이터로 향했다.

Cave and Basin National Historic Site   

 여행 중에 자연 속에서 휴식과 아이들과의 놀이를 위해 자주 찾게 되는 두 장소가 있다. 하나는 santuary이고, 또 하나는 놀이터다. 이번 여행에서도 어김없이 놀이터를 들러 잠시 놀았지만 아직 스스럼없이 어울리기엔 시간이 더 필요한 듯했다. 놀이터에서 잠시 놀다가 바로 옆 강가로 이동했는데, 일광욕을 즐기는 사람들과 수영하는 이들이 어우러진 평화로운 광경이 펼쳐졌다. 아이가 발을 담근 물은 너무 차가웠지만, 그 차가운 물에서 수영하는 사람들의 용기가 인상적이었다.

그 후, 이전에 수레를 타고 지나갔던 Cave and Basin National Historic Site를 방문했다. 평소 입장료가 있으나 이 Site도 Strong Pass가 적용되어 무료 입장이 가능했다. 이곳은 National Park 시스템의 발상지로 알려진 곳이며, 동굴 안에는 뜨거운 온천이 있다. 하지만 보호종인 달팽이가 발견되어 더 이상 온천 이용은 불가능하다. 동굴 안은 온천 덕분에 무척 더웠고 특유의 유황 냄새가 가득했다. 유황에 의해 아이가 코가 자극받아 코피가 터지는 에피소드도 있었다. 다행히 화장실에서 해결할 수 있었다. 기념품 샵에서 돌맹이 몇 개를 구입했는데 이게 특별한 이유는 알 수 없지만 아마 아이에게 의미 있게 느껴지나보다.

이후 숙소로 복귀해 아침에 다른 방에서 본 것 처럼 소파침대를 만들고 키즈카페와 수영장을 이용했다. 키즈카페는 예상보다 훨씬 컸으며, 함께 놀 친구가 있었다면 더욱 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있었을 것이다. 수영장에선 야외 스파에서 록키 산맥 전망을 감상하며 따뜻한 물에 몸을 담갔는데, 마치 천국에 있는 듯한 기분이었다. 수영 후 돌아와 어제 남은 바이슨 고기와 잠봉뵈르로 저녁을 챙겨 먹었다. 고기가 맛있어 어제 배불리 먹지 않고 더 남길 걸 하는 아쉬움이 남았다. 저녁 식사 후에는 야생 동물을 찾아 외출을 했다.

Wild Elk 

 저녁 무렵, 9시가 다 되어 Cave and Basin National Historic Site 주차장에 들렀다. 세 바퀴 정도 돌다 보니 이곳이 아닌 것 같아 다른 곳으로 이동했고, 어젯밤 엘크가 나타났다고 이야기를 들은 말수레 출발지 근처 넓은 공터가 생각나 그쪽으로 향했다. 왼편에서 뭔가 움직임을 포착한 후 가까이 가보니 커다란 사슴이었다. 그러다 갑자기 남편이 "엘크다, 엘크"라고 외치며 오른쪽을 가리켰다. 순간 숨이 멎을 정도로 놀랐다. 눈앞에 나타난 엘크는 동물원의 사슴 크기 정도일 거라 예상한 것을 완전히 뛰어넘는 어마어마한 크기였다. 
밴프 운동장에 이런 거대한 엘크가 나타나다니, 진정 자연의 나라 캐나다답다는 생각이 들었다. 그 절경에 현지 러너도 엘크를 방해하지 않으려 코스를 바꿔 달렸다. 가까이 가면 위험할 수 있어 안전거리를 두고 멀리서 바라보았다. 놀랍게도 두 마리 엘크가 향한 방향에는 엄청난 수의 엘크 무리가 있었다. 신비롭고 재미있는 경험이었다.
구경을 마치고 전날 방문하지 못한 기념품샵에 들르기 위해 밴프 타운 시가지로 향했다. 적절한 자리를 찾아 차를 세우고 여러 기념품샵을 탐방했다. 이후 밴프에서 가장 유명한 비버 테일을 먹으러 갔는데, 운 좋게 마지막 손님이 되어 아이스크림 두 스쿱을 특별히 얹어 받은 행운도 있었다. 이 디저트는 꽈배기 맛의 빵 위에 달콤한 두바이 초콜릿 토핑을 올린 것으로, 비버 꼬리를 닮아 그렇게 불린다.
내일 아침 7시 레이크 루이스 셔틀을 타기 위해 새벽 일찍 일어나야 해서 숙소로 돌아와 침대 머리맡 창문 너머 별빛을 바라보며 하루를 마무리했다. (사진에는 별이 잘 찍히지 않아 아쉬웠다.)

 Travel day 4 was the first day we slept in. I leisurely woke up after 9 a.m. and made some jambon-beurre to eat before heading out to the Cowboy Cookout starting at 11. The Cowboy Cookout is an activity where you ride a horse-drawn wagon along the Bow River to a place for lunch (lunch and tip included, $408.34 for 2 adults and 1 child).
We arrived early at the departure point surrounded by mountains, watched other groups ride horses, and explored the wagon. Then a large Filipino family and a German family arrived and we all set off together. Before riding, we talked about coming back here again on a cool evening since elks had appeared at the nearby clearing the previous night.
After the initial uphill section, the horses moved very slowly. Passing the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, we entered a vehicle-restricted area where a brilliantly colored river appeared on the right. The scenery of water, mountains, and forest was unrealistically beautiful. There was a spot where two water layers didn’t mix, like oil and water: meltwater from a glacier met still river water — a truly fascinating sight.
After about an hour’s ride, we arrived at the Cowboy Cookout site in the middle of the woods. There was a bar where drinks and food were available, and a cowboy grilled our steaks. The tables were arranged in a circle around a crackling campfire, creating a warm atmosphere. While the steaks were cooking, the kid tried lasso rope throwing with the cowboy; he struggled at first but finally caught it on a cattle horn, which was quite amusing.
We enjoyed the steaks with salad and cheese soup. The female wagon guide who joined us was from eastern Canada and shared that most staff were from Britain and Australia. It was interesting to learn that the park hired white, blonde employees to fulfill tourists’ cowboy dreams.
She recommended we try elk meat since we had eaten bison. Not getting to eat elk meat in Banff was a bit disappointing. She said in eastern Canada, buffalo meat is also popular.
After lunch, we rode the wagon back to the start. The return trip was just as beautiful. We spent about three enjoyable hours and then headed to a newly opened playground nearby.
During the trip, there are two types of places we often visit for nature and playing with kids: sanctuaries and playgrounds. This trip was no exception. We stopped by the playground to socialize with kids but apparently, more time is needed for them to mingle comfortably. After playing a while, we went down to the riverside where people were sunbathing and swimming peacefully. The water was very cold, but the swimmers were impressive.
We later visited the Cave and Basin National Historic Site again, which usually charges admission but was free with the Strong Pass. This site is known as the birthplace of the National Park system, containing a hot spring inside a cave. However, the presence of a protected snail species means bathing in the hot spring is no longer allowed. The cave was very hot and smelled strongly of sulfur. Unfortunately, our child’s nose irritated by the sulfur caused a nosebleed, which was quickly managed.
We bought some stones at the gift shop—not sure why, but it felt meaningful. At the accommodation, we visited a kids’ cafe and swimming pool. The kids’ cafe was larger than expected. Without friends to play with, the kids only got a taste of it before changing into swimsuits and heading to the pool. The outdoor spa offered a stunning Rocky Mountain view, and soaking in the warm water felt like heaven. After plenty of swimming, we returned and had leftover bison meat and jambon-beurre for dinner. The meat was so good I regretted not leaving more from yesterday to eat tonight.
After dinner, we went out looking for wildlife.
Toward evening at around 9 p.m., we noticed the Cave and Basin National Historic Site looked relatively isolated, so we first went to its parking lot and circled three times before deciding it wasn’t the right spot. We then headed to the clearing where an elk had appeared the night before. On the left, something moved-my husband thought it was a rock but it was a deer. Suddenly he shouted “Elk! Elk!” and I was speechless with shock. The elk was enormous, much bigger than I had imagined—far beyond the size of zoo deer.
Seeing such a gigantic elk near a playground was breathtaking and felt so characteristically Canadian. A local runner even changed his route to avoid disturbing the elk. For safety, we kept our distance while admiring the scene. Two elk were visible leading a massive herd—an incredible and unforgettable sight.
After the wildlife viewing, we went to Banff town to find parking and checked out multiple souvenir shops. Then we went to try the famous Beaver Tail dessert. We were lucky to be the last customers and got two scoops of ice cream on top. The dessert is a pastry topped with very sweet Dubai chocolate, named for its resemblance to a beaver’s tail.
Since we had to catch the Lake Louise Shuttle at 7 a.m. the next day, we returned to the accommodation early, gazing at stars through the window by the bed before falling asleep (though the stars didn’t show well in photos).
