Kamloops - Hello Toast

Vancouver

Kamloops - Hello Toast
Woke up in the morning, had the free breakfast, packed our bags, and finally set off for Vancouver. It was a day requiring over 9 hours of driving, so we steeled ourselves. Plugged in the phone to charge via the car's USB port, and suddenly Google Maps popped up on the dashboard display. Realized then how we'd been fumbling all along—balancing the phone on a hat on the dashboard, grabbing it as it slid left and right during turns. Comforted ourselves that discovering it today was better late than never.
Left at 9 a.m. and drove nonstop to arrive in Kamloops around 1 p.m. Searched online for lunch and found Hello Toast, a popular local brunch spot. It's a cozy brunch cafe on downtown Victoria Street, run by a family and loved by locals for over 20 years. With the child fast asleep in the car, initially planned to order a few recommended items to go. While waiting after ordering, the child woke up needing the bathroom, so we went inside together. As expected, it exuded a warm, family-operated vibe—walls covered in family photos capturing the place's history, bustling yet comfortable with full tables. The quick bathroom stop naturally turned into "Let's just eat here."
Food arrived shortly, and one bite had us exchanging wide-eyed looks—it was truly delicious. Husband declared it the best meal of the entire Canada trip. Generous portions, homey comfort, and brunch-worthy presentation all hit the mark. Finished with a brownie topped with ice cream for dessert. Bellies and hearts full, paid 98.75 CAD total.
With satisfaction, gripped the wheel again and headed to Vancouver. Kamloops to Vancouver is about 350 km, taking roughly 3.5 hours via Coquihalla Highway. Encountering such a memorable meal midway made Kamloops a warm highlight in the travel log.
Vancouver
The route to Vancouver crossed massive mountain ranges, with signs everywhere warning of rapidly changing weather. Blazing sun on one side, mushroom-like thunderclouds looming far off, sudden downpours—vividly felt the Rockies' fickle climate. Traffic surged dramatically near city entry.
Needed gas but planned minimal fill-up at a cheap spot ahead of tomorrow's rental return. Googled affordable stations, exited the highway, but child suddenly needed the bathroom urgently, so husband rushed off with them, leaving me to fuel alone. Panicked like possessed—unsure of fuel type or amount, fretted it might be diesel—husband checked from the office: regular gas, but the priciest premium grade and "a lot" of it (24 CAD). Grateful it wasn't diesel, spun it positively into laughter. This became our family's infamous "Chevron fueling fiasco," my top teasing material.
Entering Vancouver downtown, spotted a Tesla Cybertruck and snapped excited photos, then headed to the reserved Burrard Hotel. Downtown's no-left-turn zones everywhere had Google stubbornly routing lefts, leading to massive detours before finally arriving. Checked in at 7 p.m., unpacked, then around 8 p.m. set out for Stanley Park's totem poles.
Arrived at Stanley Park in pitch-black evening. Strolled slowly around the totem poles and night views, returning to the hotel past midnight. Light dinner of hotel complimentary non-alcoholic cocktails, fries, and leftovers packed from Hello Toast lunch, then crashed. Long drive fatigue melted away, marking the true start of Vancouver adventures.
