DAY 8 Vancouver Science World

Yolks       

 오늘은 밴쿠버의 하루. 숙소 근처에 브런치 맛집 yolks. 에그 베네딕트와 토스트 시켜 배부르게 먹고 사이언스 월드로 향했다. (92.60달러) 

Science World       

여행할 때마다 꼭 들르는 곳 중 하나가 바로 어린이 과학관이다. 외국의 어린이 과학관은 우리나라와 어떤 점이 다른지 비교해보는 것도 큰 즐거움이다. 밴쿠버에서도 예외 없이 들르기로 했다. 원래는 가족이 모두 함께 가려 했지만, 쉐브론 주유 사건으로 인해 과량의 남은 가솔린을 처리해야 했던 남편은 대신 아울렛으로 향했고, 아이와 나만 입장했다. 입장료는 아이 1 + 어른 1, 총 63달러였다.

입장 후, 과천 과학관에서 본 것과 비슷한 컴퓨터 맵 만들기와 가상 생명체 생성 프로그램을 한참 즐기다가 우주 탐사 레고관으로 이동했다. 이곳에서는 1960년대 아폴로 계획의 후속으로 진행 중인 ‘아르테미스 계획(Artemis Program)’을 레고로 구현해 전시해 두었는데, 아이들의 흥미를 끄는 구성이 인상적이었다. 한 시간가량을 레고관에서 보낸 뒤 자연사관으로 이동했다. 다양한 동물, 식물, 광물을 직접 체험할 수 있는 전시물이 많았다. 그중 실제 아홀로톨이 가장 눈길을 끌었는데, 아이는 방과후 활동에서 이미 보았다며 시큰둥한 반응을 보였다. 요즘 아이들은 우리가 신기해했던 것들을 이미 당연하게 접하고 있어, 새삼 세대 차이를 느꼈다. 과학관 중앙 홀 주변에는 신체 체험 전시물이 많아 하나씩 시도하느라 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다. 다음 전시관에 들어서자 갑자기 밝아졌는데, 거대한 통창 너머로 보이는 False Creek 뷰가 환상적이었다. 이런 뷰를 가진 자리에 카페가 아니라 어린이 과학관이 있다는 사실에서 ‘역시 선진국이구나’ 하는 생각이 들었다. 이곳 역시 아이들이 몸으로 직접 체험할 수 있는 전시물이 많아 다양하게 즐길 수 있었다. 마지막으로 과학 실험 쇼를 관람하며 오랜 탐험으로 지친 다리를 쉬게 했다. 나오는 길에는 야광 크리스탈 키트(16.79달러)를 기념품으로 구입하며 약 4시간의 과학관 탐방을 마쳤다. 그러나 나가기 직전 야외에도 또 다른 체험 구역이 이어져 있어, 끝이 없다고 느끼며 아이를 설득해 빠져나왔다. 

근처 놀이터에서 잠시 놀고, 아울렛 쇼핑을 마친 남편의 차를 타고 렌터카 반납 장소로 이동했다. 렌터카 반납을 무사히 마치고 숙소로 돌아가는 길에 피자 두 조각(15달러)을 사서 함께 맛있게 먹은 뒤, 잠시 쉰 후 개스타운 증기 시계탑으로 향했다. 

Gas Town      

 밴쿠버에서 개스타운은 꼭 들러야 할 곳이다. 우버로 개스타운까지 이동(11.07달러). 메인 볼거리는 세계 최초 증기 동력 시계로, 15분마다 증기를 뿜고 정각에는 더 화려한 증기 디스플레이와 멜로디가 어우러진다. 6시 정각 공연을 감상한 뒤 바로 옆 Hudson House Trading Company 기념품 가게에서 재미난 티셔츠와 귀여운 인형들을 천천히 둘러보다 친구들에게 줄 연필과 열쇠고리를 고른다. 쇼핑이 꽤 오래 걸린다(55.32달러). 그 후 캐나다 플레이스 쪽 워터프론트로 향하니 밴쿠버 사인이 보인다. C 글자가 없어 가족끼리 몸으로 C를 만들며 재미있는 사진을 남긴다.

 저녁에 빅웨이 핫팟에 가니 대기가 길어 기다리다 화장실에서 내가 아이의 친구 선물 열쇠고리를 떨어뜨려 다리가 부러진다. 아이가 속상해 보여 다시 왕복 30분 거리 기념품 가게로 달려가 새로 사 오는 사이 대기 번호가 지나버리지만, 남편이 설명하니 친절히 들여보내 준다. 각자 원하는 재료를 담아 국물을 선택하면 바로 끓여 서빙해 주고, 식사 후 아이스크림 디저트까지 즐겨 가성비 최고의 만족스러운 한 끼를 마친다(68.35달러).

 숙소로 돌아가는 길에 밴쿠버 아트 갤러리 앞에서 열린 댄스 파티를 흥겹게 구경하고, 마트에서 내일 기차 간식으로 에너지바를 사 든다(17.58달러). 호텔로 돌아와 여유롭게 하루를 마무리한다.

Yolks

Today's Vancouver day starts with brunch at Yolks near the hotel. Order Eggs Benedict and toast, eat heartily, then head to Science World (92.60 CAD).

Science World

One must-visit on every trip is the children's science museum—comparing foreign ones to Korea's is always fun. No exception in Vancouver. Originally planned for the family, but husband heads to the outlet to burn off excess gas from the Chevron fiasco, so just child and I enter. Admission: child 1 + adult 1, total 63 CAD.

After entry, spend time on computer map-making and virtual creature creation like Gwacheon Science Museum, then move to space exploration Lego exhibit. Features Lego models of the Artemis Program, Apollo's successor—impressive for kids. Spend an hour there before natural history section with hands-on animals, plants, minerals. Real axolotl draws eyes, but child shrugs, having seen it in after-school activities—felt the generation gap as kids take our wonders for granted.

Central hall has body experience exhibits, trying them all without noticing time pass. Next room brightens suddenly with massive windows overlooking stunning False Creek view—impressed that such a spot houses a science museum, not a cafe, thinking "advanced country indeed." More interactive exhibits for kids. End with science demo show, resting tired legs from long exploration. Buy glow-in-the-dark crystal kit souvenir on exit (16.79 CAD), wrapping up 4-hour visit. Outdoor exhibits continue right outside, so persuade child it's endless and leave.

Play briefly at nearby playground, pick up husband post-outlet shopping, head to rental car return. Smooth return, grab two pizza slices on way back to hotel (15 CAD), eat deliciously, rest briefly, then off to Gastown Steam Clock.

Gastown

Gastown is a Vancouver must-see. Uber there (11.07 CAD). Main attraction: world's first steam-powered clock, puffs steam every 15 minutes, elaborate display and melody on the hour. Watch 6 p.m. show, then browse next-door Hudson House Trading Company gift shop—funny T-shirts, cute plushies—pick pencils and keychains for friends. Shopping takes quite a while (55.32 CAD). Head to Waterfront near Canada Place, spot Vancouver sign. No C, so family poses making C with bodies for fun photos.

Evening at Big Way Hotpot—long wait, go to bathroom and drop child's friend gift keychain, leg breaks off. Child upset, rush back 30-minute round trip to shop for replacement; our number passes, but husband explains and they kindly let us in. Pick ingredients, choose broth—they cook and serve; ice cream dessert after, top value satisfying meal (68.35 CAD).

On way back, enjoy lively dance party at Vancouver Art Gallery, buy energy bars at mart for tomorrow's train snacks (17.58 CAD). Return to hotel, relax to end the day.
